The auto-format option keeps dropping the else on a second line.

legal.

if (1 -eq 2) { 'true' }else { 'false' }

illegal.
if (1 -eq 2) { 'true' }
else { 'false' }

else : The term 'else' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function

I am not sure what you mean. It works perfectly fine in a script and delivers the expected "false" output.
