MSI installer pre and post actions

Post by sjsexton »

PowerShell Studio 2015
Version 4.2.95

My workstation operating system is 64 bit.

I'm working with the MSI installer in Powershell studio 2015. When the installer executes on a target machine, I want to be able to run pre and post actions.

For example if certain pre-reqs aren't met, I want the MSI installer to send a message and exit. Does the MSI wizard have a way to support actions like this?

MSI installer pre and post actions

Post by SAPIEN Support Forums »

This is an automated post. A real person will respond soon.

Thank you for posting, sjsexton.

Did you remember to include the following?
  • 1. Product, version and build (e.g. Product: PowerShell Studio 2014, Version & Build: 4.1.71. Version and build information can be found in the product's About box accessed by clicking the blue icon with the 'i' in the upper right hand corner of the ribbon.)
    2. Specify if you are running a 32 or 64 bit version
    3. Specify your operating system and if it is 32 or 64 bit.
    4. Attach a screenshot if your issue can be seen on the screen
    5. Attach a zip file if you have multiple files (crash reports, log entries, etc.) related to your issue.
If not, please take a moment to edit your original post or reply to this one.

It is on our list of things to do. Can I ask what type of custom actions you are looking to run?

Sure. In my case for the pre-action I would like to verify if certain powershell modules are already installed.

For my post action sequence I would like to install a Windows server feature.

Now of course I can run these actions the first time my installed program launches. But that could take additional time. Also in some cases specific Windows server features require a reboot. I would rather that occur in the MSI install phase verses the first time my program is running.

Thanks!

So that sounds like you need to run PowerShell scripts pre and post install. I am asking because WiX does support VBScript/JScript natively but we assumed that this would be a little outdated at this point.
